My initial opinion:
I was greeted by a very professional website. The top courses listed include; Quality Assurance, Business Analysis, Microsoft.net and others in addition to the advertised Java Courses. There is definitely an opportunity for a job seeker to gain new skills or improve current skills. A popup soon appeared offering me a demo. It became painfully obvious that this was not going to be free.
My final observation:
An excellent option for training, they are very high rated. Not a free training option and not really forthcoming about price. Someone who wants free online training may need to consider a different option.
Is it possible to train for nine weeks and make $90,000 with no college degree?
Well, Matthew Lesko says so! I am sure you remember Matthew Lesko from the Grant books. I am personally a fan of the question marks, but I digress. This is not online training but it is a phenomenal opportunity for someone who is looking to change their life.
Matthew Lesko of http://lesko.com/ interviews Kris Fields of http://www.randklabs.com/ and an alumni of http://www.appacademy.io/#p-home, about how to become a software developer without going to College & 9 weeks of free training.
I visited the website and must agree that this is a phenomenal opportunity for a qualified individual. There are a few caveats here. First, if you are a stay-at-home mom or dad looking for an internet training opportunity, this is not it. This is a physical training with an extremely rigorous nine week schedule. The second is that you have to be accepted into the program. Therefore, there are additional preparatory classes that must be taken in order to successfully take the course.
The gifted computer professional who has been prevented from continuing education due to finances will find this the dream opportunity to enter into a dream career.
Alison courses is a website that offers online learners the opportunity to take courses ona wide variety of choices free of charge. Students can also earn a shiny certification of completion for a small fee. Courses are offered in IT, Language, Health, Science, Humanities, Business, Math, Marketing and Lifestyle.
I observed that the website has undergone a significant makeover. This lends a more quality appearance to the website overall. The MOOC-style of this website is consistent with other well-known websites such as Coursera.
The courses that I have taken were not overly simplified. It was almost impossible to take the test and pass the class in any of the courses that I have taken without some sort of review of the content. This says alot about the quality of the training.
There are also no fees or hoops to jump through to get started. For example, a well-known MOOC would like students to upload a copy of their license for identity verification purposes. People who are interested in lifelong learning will find that this website more than fits their needs.
Those who are looking for certifications to add to resume may have a harder time convincing an employer or future employer to accept these certifications. I also doubt that anyone who plans to attend any sort of accredited school will be able to use their Alison Certification for any academic credit.
So why use Alison? In my opinion these sort of online training schools are a great way to gather the necessary online knowledge to learn a skill and do new things. Many a saavy MOOC learner has parlayed a free online certification into something greater.
The downside of Alison are the constant emails about purchasing certifications. It is very clear that the students who purchase the certifications keep the business going and therefore the pressure to purchase a certificaiton will be there for any learner who chooses to complete an Alison Course.
One addendum to all of my reviews about MOOC's is that they are very similar to a Sunday afternoon buffet. You will see so many classes that you want to take and sign up for them. Once life happens there is a very good chance you will not take the class, so its better to sign up for one class at a time. It custs down on the "did not complete class" guilt.
One of the most well-known entities in the MOOC community is Coursera. A saavy online learner will find several options to train for free online, even with the new setup.
Coursera continues to offer the option to audit their courses which wont grant you a certification, but you will be able to complete all of the assignments and receive a grade. This is a great option to obtain new skills.
Coursera also offers an advanced option to obtain actual college degrees as well as various certifications. A new learner should begin with Coursera as they require deadlines and are a great gauge if online training is a good option.
The hybrid degree programs listed on this website makes it clear that we are on the path towards free or almost free education options for those who need or desire them.
Open to Study and Open University
This website is another website that offers learners several options for study. Topics include Arts and Humanties, Business, Education, Health, Information Technology, Law and Justice and Science and Engineering. There are 180 options for the interested student. You can choose the areas of study, level and then the provider.
Things to keep in mind: This website is based in Australia, therefore the certifcations might not be accepted by a United States University or employer. My opinion is that this online school came up as an option for free training. Unfortunately it appears that there is a charge but its very difficult to determine what the fee is,if any. It is also a bit difficult to enroll in classes. Overall it would be a great option if it is what it advertises.
Microsoft Virtual Academy
Microsoft has created a free online university for those who want to learn new skills and gather new opportunities.
Moble App Development
My opinion is that the website is very easy to navigate. I don't see a way that this cannot help a resume. It is doubtful that a school will accept the credits but employers are sure to be impressed if necessary skills are obtained directly from Microsoft.
Recently I was viewing a Youtube video that was constantly interrupted by an advertisement for Udemy. It seemed like a professional company and therefore I decided to see if it held any potential for free online training.
I was greeted with a bright and relatively easy to use website. The courses on the front page were all around $10 and there appears to be a regular ongoing sale. I searched for free in the search function and found a large volume of free online courses.
These courses ranged from Ruby on Rails to Dropshipping. They seem relatively well put together. Overall, I was impressed with the website and think that it is a great way to obtain free online training. The certifications for these courses are not likely to be able to be used for credit at any higher learning institution. On the other hand, these courses are an excellent way to learn new skills and even prove these skills on a resume.
